Summer 2009 – Wind Energy

During summer 2009, students explored the use of wind as an energy source. Students completed several engineering design activities investigating the impact on turbine efficiency related to the number, shape and angle of the blades and the gear ratio within the turbine motor.

Students also designed and built anemometers to measure wind speed with Dr. Paul Imbertson and his team of graduate students (College of Science and Engineering). Instantaneous wind speed measurements were compared to seasonal records from google earth to determine appropriate areas to place wind turbines within the reservation.
