2009 Summer – Water Energy

Students applied concepts from the wind turbine activities to design water turbines. Students used their water turbines to investigate the differences in flow rate at various places on a stream – center of the stream, bends in the stream, upstream vs. downstream etc.

Students learned how to harness the power of water through an investigation of the Elwha dam. This activity developed by the NSF-funded National Center for Earth-surface Dynamics allowed students to investigate a real life problem – how to best remove the Elwha dam to return the river to its natural state.
