Dr. Gillian Roehrig is an Associate Professor of Science Education. Gill is a former high school chemistry teacher with a strong interest in engaging students in inquiry-based activities and integrating technology into science classrooms. Technology Enhanced Communities (TEC) funded by the Minnesota Office of Higher Education is an online learning community developed in collaboration with graduate students David Groos and Joel Donna for middle school science teachers in Minneapolis Public Schools working to integrate technology into their classrooms. TEC will be extended to include teachers on the White Earth Reservation.
Dr. Tamara Moore is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics/Engineering Education. Tamara is a former high school mathematics teacher and her research involves helping students engage in STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) disciplines through contextual problem solving. Her work on an NSF funded project entitled Modeling: Eliciting, Developing, Integrating and Assessing (MEDIA) Project is creating and researching multi-disciplinary engineering problems for use at the undergraduate and K-12 level. Problems from the MEDIA project are being extended to the RFTS project, as well as to local school districts, such as Mahtomedi, who are implementing engineering into their curriculum.
Stephan Carlson, Ph.D., has worked for the University of Minnesota Extension and CFANS for the last 15 years doing outreach and teaching classes in science and environmental education. He has worked in outdoor recreation, informal science education and environmental interpretation. He has been teaching classes for the White Earth Science and Math summer school program for the last 10 years. His research is on understanding the components that informal science experiences have on young people and how to develop quality programs
Brant Miller is a Science Education graduate student within the department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Minnesota TC. Prior to Brant’s current graduate school journey, he was at the helm of an 8th grade science classroom in Western South Dakota. While teaching 8th grade science Brant and his students explored content areas such as earth science, chemistry, physical science, along with geospatial technologies. As a member of the RFTS team Brant is interested in the interface between culture and science content and how the two can be leveraged for student engagement.
Joel Donna is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Minnesota in Curriculum and Instruction – Science Education. He taught physics, chemistry, and physical science for six years at Kasson-Mantorville in south-east Minnesota. Joel’s research and teaching interests revolve around improving science teacher development across the continuum. In particular he is most interested in supporting beginning teachers during the induction phase. His dissertation topic revolves around understanding an online mentoring/support program for beginning Minnesota STEM teachers called STEMMP. He is also interested in using technology to support engineering design challenges.
Selcen Guzey is a PhD candidate in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Minnesota where she also received her MA in Science Education. Her research interests focus on science teacher knowledge development and technology integration into science classrooms. In RFTS project, Selcen has been working on designing and implementing STEM curriculum in the after school and summer school programs.
